Powell Gardens of Kansas City

Enjoying Powell Gardens

Kansas City has lots of fun things to do. Since moving there I have really enjoyed exploring all over the city. But occasionally it’s nice to see what the area has to offer outside of the downtown district and the neighborhoods. Powell Gardens  is located 30 miles east of Kansas City (on Highway 50) and it is a fun, change of pace location to spend the day.

The Gardens cover a large area and include many different, unique gardens. You can walk or travel around on a trolley (during the peak season) that goes from the Visitor Education Center to the Perennial Garden, the Rock and Waterfall Garden and the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel.

The Island Garden has more than 200 varieties of water plants in pools and containers.

The Fountain Gardens are the perfect place to cool off when the weather is hot. We certainly did the day we were there!

The exhibits in the glass-domed conservatory change six times per year. I think it would be really fun to go back in August when the space becomes a Butterfly House. The 2014 Festival of the Butterflies is August 1-3 and 8-10. Those dates have special activities planned. You can still visit on days without the special events and see the butterflies August 4-7 and 11-14. I was really excited to find out about the Tripod Photography Day on August 8, 2014. During the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. the Garden allows tripods and monopods to be used in the conservatory. (You’ll pay the Garden admission plus a $5 per photographer fee.)

One of my favorite buildings in the Garden is the Chapel. It is absolutely beautiful and would be an awesome place for a wedding!

Our day exploring the gardens was a lot of fun and something different from our usual weekend events. I want to keep exploring my adopted city and surrounding area and not get stuck in a rut! Where else do you suggest I go?water lilies powell gardens of kansas city
