Planning a Kansas City Girls Weekend

Girls Weekend

I’ve been wanting to have my friends come and enjoy a Kansas City Girls Weekend for quite awhile. Right now I’m working on a fun itinerary for us to enjoy.

#1 – Picking the right weekend

I think the first thing to do is research any upcoming activities in Kansas City and pick a good weekend. I plan to pick one of the First Friday Weekends because those are the weekends where there are lots of extra things going on that would make a Kansas City Girls Weekend lots of fun! My favorite First Friday event is to go to all the antique stores that are open in the West Bottoms Historic District of Kansas City at that time of the month. The stores specialize in reclaimed, repurposed and vintage items that are one of a kind. The area has a bit of a festival atmosphere as hundreds of people go from building to building, each filled with multiple vendors. In addition, some of the City’s best food trucks are parked on the streets to feed the hungry shoppers. I’m partial to the falafels from the Jerusalem Café’s truck. (Some of the buildings also have their own cafes as well.) Directions can be found at www.westbottomsantiques.com.

#2 – Pick Breakfast or Brunch stops

When dining with my friends the goal is always to linger and take our time so I want to pick a fun place to do that. The Classic Cup Café on the Plaza at 301 W. 47th Street is one of my favorites. They have an outside patio that gives you a great view of what’s happening on the Plaza. Their Sunday brunch hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., which means you don’t have to be up too early to still enjoy brunch!

I’ve also been wanting to try out a new spot on the Plaza . . . Coal Vines at 618 Ward Parkway.  My research shows they have a Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. I am going to have to try their Captain Crunch French Toast since that was my all time favorite cereal as a kid. I think this definitely needs to be a stop one day.

If Westport is your destination, I have had friends strongly recommend the Westport Café and Bar at 419 Westport Road…..possibly because of the complimentary mimosa, bellini or bloody mary that comes with your brunch on Saturday or Sunday. For some reason this seems like a good reason to try it out!

#3 – Pick shopping locations

Kansas City Plaza Fountain

Kansas City Plaza Fountain

As I have already mentioned my first shopping goal for this particular girls weekend is going to be to explore the shops down at the West Bottoms on a First Friday Weekend. After that I think we will have to spend some time meandering around Country Club Plaza. I love shopping there! (There are over 180 stores!!!)

Chuy's Kansas City

Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant

#4 – Pick Happy Hour locations

Since I’m already planning for us to be shopping around the Plaza I think I’ll plan on Chuy’s Mexican Food at 209 W. 46th Terrace for Happy Hour. The first thing to catch my eye is their outside, upstairs balcony where we can look down on the fountain and people watch. I heard that their Happy Hour includes free chips, queso and salsa as well as a free nacho bar. It definitely sounds worth trying out! It is, however, always good to have a back up plan so I think my reserve choice will be to try out the roof-top patio of The Drunken Fish in the Power & Light District. I haven’t tried it out yet but it is in the middle of downtown Kansas City so at least I know the view will be great.

#5 – Pick Dinner locations

There are lots of great places to go in Kansas City but since I really want my friends to have a great Kansas City Girls Weekend I’m leaning toward taking them to dinner at The Peanut for wings. I’m partial to the original location at 5000 Main Street because I like the hole-in-the-wall feel. I love the wings so I’ve never actually tried anything else there. Let me know if you have any other great places I should try out because I am definitely open to suggestions.

#6 – Pick evening entertainment options

You may have already heard me say this but I just love Ernie Biggs Dueling Piano Bar in the Westport area of Kansas City. I always have fun and the entertainers never disappoint. It is more fun to sit up front so I always like to call ahead and reserve enough tables for my group. My friends will love this place! It is time for them to come to Kansas City!

Please let me know if you have any other suggestions for me to make my Kansas City Girls Weekend even more fun!  Thanks!

Captain Crunch French Toast is most delish, had that at a B&B in Eureka Springs AK. We were in Kansas City the first of May and enjoyed the Cigar Box, a bar. I would have to look up the address. We loved KC and thought it was cleaner than Chicago and more cosmepolitan than St. Louis.
