Guide to Christmas in Kansas City

guide christmas kansas cityThis Christmas season is the 7th year I have had the chance to celebrate the holidays in Kansas City. I absolutely love my adoptive city! It has everything you could possibly need to enjoy the season in style. I love exploring the city and finding new favorites and these are my current ones.

Here is my guide to Christmas in Kansas City:

The Country Club Plaza

The Plaza

When I think about Christmas in Kansas City my first thought is seeing the lights down at the Plaza. Historic buildings in the 15 block district of the Country Club Plaza are decked out with thousands of lights that get turned on each year on Thanksgiving. The Plaza goes from being beautiful to a magical winter wonderland. Shopping and restaurants are plentiful so you’ll have everything you need to survive Christmas shopping.

Kansas City’s Union Station

Union Station

I am very partial to train stations since I take the train from Kansas City to St. Louis every week (for work). Kansas City’s Union Station is beautiful during the Christmas holidays with the giant Christmas trees and train displays and well worth a visit.

I like brunch at Harvey’s or the Happy Hour at Pierponts, which is one of the most popular in the city. This historic setting is named for railroad baron, J.P. (Pierpont) Morgan.

The Nutcracker Ballet

The Nutcracker Ballet

I grew up seeing the Nutcracker at Powell Hall in St. Louis. Later in life it was a yearly tradition to watch my daughters dance in their local ballet company’s production.

So when the Christmas season begins, going to see the Nutcracker Ballet is always one of my favorite things to do. The performance of the Kansas City Ballet at the Kaufman Center is spectacular . . . even for people who aren’t as obsessed with it as former dance moms and their daughters are.

Crown Center

Crown Center

Kansas City‘s Crown Center is home to the Mayor’s Christmas tree (which is one of the largest in the country). It has entertainment, shopping and restaurants and is also packed with Christmas events as well as . I’m really looking forward to seeing Santa’s Gingerbread Village for inspiration since making a gingerbread house at Christmas is one of my favorite things to do.

Does anyone have your own favorites in Kansas City at Christmas? Let me know what I’m missing! And have a wonderful holiday season!!!
