I am very lucky to count many awesome people among my friends. Every trip we take together reminds me how blessed I am to have them! And out of all the trips we’ve taken together the one we took to Galena, Illinois still ranks as one of my all time favorites. It was my first visit to Galena, but I’m positive it won’t be my last. We had such a great time and along the way I learned a few things about planning a girls weekend in Galena, Illinois:
Picking a Place to Stay
We stayed in a great place about 15 minutes outside of town. But what we quickly realized was how fun it would be to stay right in downtown Galena. For my next trip I’ll be tempted to stay at the DeSoto House Hotel. It has 55 guest rooms and enclosed, complimentary guest parking. Galena is a popular place for tourists, so having a place to park downtown would be great. You can explore other lodging options in Galena at gelena.org.
Planning Things to Do
The downtown area of Galena is packed with fun shops. My friends and I shopped for hours and didn’t make it to all the shops. One of the best things we planned besides shopping was a scooter ride to one of the local wineries. Such fun!!! It took around 2 hours for “scooter training” and then the 11 mile ride out to Galena Cellars Vineyard. Part of the fee for the scooter rental included a shuttle ride back to town so we could enjoy a wine tasting at the vineyard (while the scooters were loaded on a trailer and safely returned). If you need other options besides shopping and scooter riding you should check out Galena events for more ideas.
Making Dinner Plans
Besides the shops full of clothes, jewelry, gifts and antiques, Galena has plenty of restaurants and bars. Our first night there we just walked into a bar and enjoyed a great meal. The second night we decided to try out an Italian restaurant called Vinny Vanucchi’s Little Italy that had been recommended to us. Unfortunately we didn’t make reservations, so we waited over an hour for a table. It was packed and clearly popular and worth the wait. However, next time I go I will probably make reservations for dinner if I plan to eat anywhere other than a bar.
We finished our weekend on Sunday morning with breakfast at a downtown cafe and talk of when we could come back to Galena. We are hoping for a return visit soon!
